Jay Som’s Melina Duterte and Palehound’s Ellen Kempner have teamed up for a new indie-pop collaboration titled ‘Bachelor’.

The first dosage of dream-pop doled out by the duo is ‘Anything At All’ a track born out of a pre-pandemic studio break back in January 2020, during which the two wrote, performed and produced the song together.

Jay Som has been known for the bedroom-drench wistfulness of her songwriting that has garnered her a steady number of fans since her 2017 debut Everybody Works. Ellen Kempner’s work fronting Palehound has similarly been met with a cult following and received critical praise for its distilled honesty, which Kempner describes as “journal rock”.

In a statement, Bachelor announced, “We’re so excited to finally share this song with y’all and announce our new band!”

Adding, “We’ve been dear friends and huge fans of each other for years and were lucky enough to get to work together in January 2020 before the quarantine. We feel that ’Anything at All’ is an even blend of our tastes and writing styles and to release it feels very hopeful and joyous to us.”

The duo has individually amassed critical acclaim in their respective regards, both known for providing catchy indie hooks. This collaboration sees the styles meddle towards a pleasingly predictable deliverance of brilliant music.

The single, released via Polyvinyl on Thursday, drives along on a catchy low-end bass hook which is then loaded with layers of recording techniques. Perhaps it is in this regard that the undeniably toe-tapping tune reaches a slight sticking point in that it fails to transcend the idea of a studio track.

That being said, it succeeds in pretty much all other regards; it certainly delivers the dreaminess that it sets out to provide, but with enough production wizardry to spare you from drifting off to sleep entirely, as the dualling guitars inject a different dynamic and jolt of energy to the piece.

It is a track that offers a calming snippet of escapist sincerity to soundscape dreams of the approaching post-pandemic summer.

At present, it is unsure where exactly the collaboration will lead, but fans of their original projects will certainly be eager to hear more from the twosome.
