Singaporean singer-songwriter Linying has released a new single, ‘Daylight Blows Into One Door’, her first for Sony Music.

Linying’s ethereal vocals take centrestage in the song, which features piano chords and subtle production. It was co-written by Chris Walla, formerly of Death Cab For Cutie. Hear it below:

On Twitter, Linying said ‘Daylight Blows Into One Door’ is “about panic and happiness and fear and loss”, and that Walla is someone she “so look[s] up to – whose exquisite work has shaped my own and whose gentleness has informed the way i’d like to make the people around me feel.”

She also elaborated on the intricate illustration that doubles for the cover art for the single:

The singer-songwriter had shared the news of her signing and new single on her Instagram account on July 6, expressing her joy at joining a new label. “It’s been a long time coming and I am flushed with excitement,” Linying wrote.

‘Daylight Blows Into One Door’ is her first non-collaborative release in two years, following the single ‘All Of Our Friends Know’ in 2019.

This follows the release of Singapore’s 2021 National Day song ‘The Road Ahead’, which was co-written by Linying. She sings on the track alongside fellow Singaporean artists Sezairi, Shye and Shabir.

The song – unveiled on July 2 – was written, arranged and produced by Linying and producer evanturetime. Its lyrics tell of the nation’s perseverance through obstacles.

Linying released her first collection of original music in 2016 with the EP ‘Paris 12’, her only project to date. She has since dropped a number of singles over the years, the most recent one being a collaboration with Charlie Lim on the track ‘Hummingbird’, which dropped early last year.
