Cambridge rockers Sports Team have announced the release of a 12-inch vinyl containing B-sides, rarities, and raw new songs titled Plant Test.
The new release, which is explicitly being promoted not as an album but a collection of odds and ends, will be available exclusively at independent retailers and record stores. That’s right: if you were hoping to pick up Plant Test at Tesco, I’m afraid you are out of luck. As the band puts it, “No restocks. No represses”.
The material featured will cover the entire span of the band’s relatively short career, from their formation in 2016 to some songs produced after their 2020 debut album Deep Down Happy. The band was all set to tour in 2020, but the global pandemic put the kibosh on those plans. Instead, those tour dates have been moved to later this year, where they have a better chance of actually occurring.
Deep Down Happy was nominated for the Mercury Prize last year, and the band managed to spin that critical goodwill into tangible success when the album made it all the way up to number two in the album charts (kept out of the top spot only by Lady Gaga’s Chromatica), making 2020 a pretty good year for the six man/woman group.
The band has said that they’ve used their time in quarantine to rehearse material for their second album. No announcements have been made for that yet, but frontman Alex Rice has made comments that make it seem like the follow up is imminent. For now, we’ll just have to settle for the scraps they give us.
Plant Test will be available May 28th. Pick it up at your favorite local record shop. Check out the Sports Team tour dates down below.
