The Joy Formidable have made a strapping return with their woozy new single, ‘Into The Blue’.
The Welsh band’s last album came in 2018 when they shared their fourth-record, AAARTH, with ‘Into The Blue’ getting the latest chapter of their story off to a fierce and flavoursome start. The track is lighter and more uplifting than one would usually expect from The Joy Formidable, but that doesn’t mean that they’ve forgotten about powerful riffs, which gives ‘Into The Blue’ an extra layer of brawn.
The new track was written in Wales but recorded in Utah, where the band is currently living. “‘Into the Blue’ is about surrendering to love and magic,” lead vocalist and guitarist Ritzy Bryan said in a statement.
Bryan continued: “Having the courage to enjoy a new journey and the mystery and excitement of something unexpected. It’s about opening your eyes to beauty and love again. Making it to the other side. Whilst not conceived as a metaphor for the times we all live in now, it certainly turned out that way.”
The track arrives along with a self-directed video that captures Bryan pondering in the bathtub, with cutaway shots of waves crashing down thrown in for good measure. Commenting on the video, she added: “I am always daydreaming in the bathtub between recordings. That diffuse thinking where your mind wanders freely – I always finish songs when I’m in that state. The idea that your imagination, that escape into another, deeper world can sometimes create a stronger connection with yourself.”
‘Into The Blue’ fuses Itzy Bryan’s intricate vocals with brash guitars and drums, which gives the song an element of shoegaze as her hushed vocals get drowned out by the driving sound behind her. The result of this juxtaposition is elysian and after almost three years since their last release, ‘Into The Blue’ is a reminder that The Joy Formidable are still as effervescent as ever.
